30 years of marriage. 30 thoughts about it!
What we have learned being married 30 years!
30 years?!?
It’s truly crazy that it’s real. We have been married 30 years?! How on earth? Here are 30 things we've learned (or believe) about marriage and relationships after 30 years.
Luck seems to be 50% of any successful relationship. We were 20 when we were married. 20!! We had no clue what we were doing or if it would work or why it would work. We got really really lucky - we say it all the time. We’ve seen lots of marriages work and lots not. Like most things in life, it seems you need a little luck to make it work.
Esther Perel said you will be married three times in your life and if you’re lucky all three will be to the same person. We could NOT agree more. That seems to be one of the ways you get really lucky - you change at the same time or in ways that continue to work. We’ve changed so much. Luckily together.
Relationships that “work” seem to be something like gears. Or zippers. Two things that sync up somehow and, when they do, it’s pretty beautiful. When they don’t, it’s frustrating and annoying. Sometimes two people can never sync which says nothing about those two people as individuals, just their ability to sync.
We were raised believing marriage was two becoming one. It’s not. It’s the two staying two, united in fidelity and freedom. (Thanks Walter Brueggemann for that one.)
There is NO formula. Wow, did we believe there was when we were first married and we learned pretty quickly that was not true. After meeting countless relationships doing it in all kinds of ways, well, there is definitely no formula.
That said, even if there is no recipe, there does seem to be some pretty important ingredients for a successful relationship.
Keep it spicy. Spicy is a great word because it can mean all kinds of things to all kinds of people and yet, everyone knows when its spicy and when they are working to keep it spicy. Or not.
Fun is also one of the most underrated aspects of a relationship. Whatever fun is to you, do that.
Adventure. We sprinkle that in anyway we can. It’s another key!
These words all seem to be important to do together in some capacity or another. They all seem like important ingredients: dream, laugh, cry, fight, create, listen, watch, read, argue, sleep, inspire, challenge, play.
Respect seems like it’s more important than love. Love is great, of course, but respecting your partner is better. Respecting their feelings, their ideas, their pains, their joys, their feelings about you… maybe it’s just because love has become so assumed and respect doesn’t get talked about as much?
Sex seems to be an indicator of things working or not. It’s not that every couple needs to be having a lot of sex but shouldn’t every couple want and desire each other? Sex, itself, may not be the thing, but it being around - or not - sure is indicative of other things. James Corden wrote in Glamour Magazine that “Everything is always about sex but sex is always about something else.” That.
Marriages that stay together for the kids seem to be staying together for some reason that is not actually the kids. Kids are very aware and very smart. Teaching them to stay in something mediocre for them doesn’t seem to be a great lesson.
Putting our relationship first has been a key component in our “liking each other” so much. Those kids are great, but they are NOT first. They need us to be solid way more than they need to be catered too. If they are old enough to be with you late into the evening, we have been known to say “door is closed at 8 and it’s a date night in our room”. Popcorn and movies without THEM! That seems a better lesson?
Mediocrity should not be acceptable. Why in the world does anyone want a mediocre marriage or relationship? If it’s not amazing, don’t just accept that as the way it is… start working to make it different. (Or maybe start thinking about ending it.)
Speaking of ending it, lots of people are better off ending their marriages than staying in them.
If this is getting kind of dark for a 30 things at 30 years of marriage, it shouldn’t be. Having the freedom to leave a marriage is one of the most powerful motivators to make it beautiful and powerful. It seems like being able to leave a marriage makes us treasure it more than just knowing it will be around no matter how we act.
The treasure of this person, still on this earth, is a gift. We have friends who have lost their favorite person and it’s so heavy. How can we treasure each other and not take each other for granted?
We were raised with the idea that marriage was a bit of a magic ceremony. It somehow made everything cool - especially in god’s eyes. We now think marriage is more like a placebo for a good relationship. At it’s best it makes us do things that make it work - like a placebo often does. Actually placebos are pretty weird and almost magical so maybe marriage is a form of magic.
It doesn’t seem like there’s been any standard of what marriage is or how it should act in any one culture or religion or group of people that hasn’t changed over the years. It’s pretty cultural. But the ideas of commitment and trust of some kind have stuck around and seem to be pretty important to the success of humanity and individuals - which is interesting to think about. Don’t take either commitment or trust lightly.
Okay it’s a long quote but hear us out. Donald Symons an anthropologist who wrote “The Evolution of Human Sexuality” talked a lot about “the tendency of men to think in terms of ‘two kinds of women’—the kind they respect and the kind they just sleep with. One can imagine courtship as, among other things, a process of placing a woman in one category or the other. The test would run roughly as follows. If you find a woman who appears genetically suitable for investment, start spending lots of time with her. If she seems quite taken by you, and yet remains sexually aloof, stick with her. If, on the other hand, she seems eager for sex right away, then by all means oblige her. But if the sex does come that easily, you might want to shift from investment mode into exploitation mode. Her eagerness could mean she’ll always be an easy seduction—not a desirable quality in a wife. Just to add a trifle more ruthlessness to this strategy, the male may actually encourage the early sex for which he will ultimately punish the woman.” This is all from the book The Moral Animal which is about Evolutionary Psychology. All of that to say, we were raised in religious homes for which we have lots of NOT great things to say about the rules and morals and false values - but we will also say it’s amazing to see from an evolutionary perspective what religion was TRYING to do. Not excusing religion but it has made us really try to dig into the very base foundations of humanity - the truths that seem to stick around no matter how you try to get rid of them.
Speaking of religion - it truly seems to have nothing to do with whether a marriage is good or bad, stays together or not, or anything else really. Statistically and anecdotally.
When we were first dating, Ryan said he didn’t believe in “the one”. Not a great way to really win someone over, but 30 years later, Ryan still holds to it. Why? It seems more important to try and find someone you can try and work to make “the one” then to try and find “the one”. In other words, don’t worry as much about making the right decision as making the decision right.
That said, after meeting countless people who knew someone was NOT the right choice before they got married and got married anyway… it may not be possible to know if you’ve found the right person, but everyone usually knows when they have NOT found the right person. Listen to it early and often.
What is the goal of marriage? Hopefully to make life better. At it’s best, marriage is another set of eyes. If only we could remember that. lol. It's meant to make us better…. someone so close to us, seeing things that are admirable and also things that could be flaws. difficult to remember, but what a gift.
Sometimes work, effort, sacrifice, empathy, and lots of giving… aren’t very fun but they do make us better.
Always ask “what is not working” both in marriage and personally. Life is so short, so we want to get it right! but if we're asking what is not working, be prepared for the answer and be prepared to hit it.
If marriage is making the people in it and the world better - which we believe it can - then why the hell would people not be all for anyone and everyone being able to participate in that? (Probably for reason #25)
Chatting over bottles of wine, dreaming and imagining our future has given us life. especially in those days where they are so monotonous. Money is tight, vacations are non existent and date nights are not happening, but dreaming and manifesting what is to come is HUGE. Take a trip into the life you want and start making a pathway.
Almost everything we believe about marriage we could just say we believe about life. It can be pretty damn good with some luck, some effort, some wonder, and some dreaming.
Here’s to 30 more amazing, fun, inspiring, adventurous, spicy years! xo Heidi & Ryan

VIBE: sophisticated, warm, fun
The invites and signage at this show-stopping wedding was all about a 3-day adventure-rich celebration of their love and the people in their lives. We think that of all the words in the vibe description, FUN was the main vibe we needed to get across. It can be a big ask to have guests to travel, but getting an invite that shouts fun makes the decision so much easier. The good vibes continued on through the day after!

Putting the *Clink* in Holiday Cheer(s)...10 HOLIDAY PARTY TIPS & TRICKS
Let’s talk about parties - and some of our favorite hosting tips!
You know we love a good party at Mango Ink! For real, though. We love hosting that party and making everything *just right*. The right food, the right drink, the right decor, the right signage and invitations (obviously), the right music, the right vibe…yeah we get into this stuff. We’ve thrown so epic parties in our time and we plan on throwing a lot more. (So much, we now have a sick event space to use called the yellow x?)
As the holiday season kicks into full gear, let’s talk parties! Large (a wedding!?) or small (an intimate dinner party?), we’ve collected some tips and tricks we’ve gathered over the years to help make your party SHINE, for you AND your guests. We asked the team. Here are the nuggets we got back. Cheers!
HEADS UP!: From the Whole Team
Get that party on everyone’s calendars well in advance. Everyone is busy these days (and probably have been) but give some space to clear the calendar for you. (Rule of thumb for weddings is nine months ahead for save-the-dates, but save-the-dates need not solely be for weddings, nor do they have to be anything fancy to get the job done for a smaller affair - a text or email will do the trick - though physical cards are always the most special…in our humble opinion).
PREP: From Katie, Producer
Always give yourself a buffer and start prep way earlier than you think you need to. Whatever you do, do NOT go to the grocery store on the day of your event. This is not exactly a glamorous tip, but I’ve been rushing around like a mad woman at the 11th hour before guests arrive too many times, and I vow to do it no more. I’ve learned my lesson. Better to have almost too much time to get myself ready, turn on the music, light the candles, and get some bevies ready to roll; it sets the tone for the whole gathering and allows me to enjoy myself at my own party so much more.
LIGHTING: From Ryan, Owner/Designer
Lighting is obvious, right? Apparently not. It's everything and it should not feel like an operating room in your dining room - I mean unless it's a surgery-themed party or something. Which could be kinda cool. Light those candles (get the hygge going) and turn the lights down, please, for the sake of everyone's vanity everywhere across the world. And because it feel nice. (There’s a reason Karyn White sang about turning those lights down - if you get that props to you!)
FOOD: From Jess, Producer (Yellow X) & Production Assistant (Mango)
When it comes to food, follow one simple rule: keep it coming. Food for appetizers, a consistent snack source, a main meal, more food to snack on after the meal is over…people like to eat. No place for a scarcity mindset where a party spread is concerned.
BEVIES: From Heidi, Owner/Designer
Have one signature cocktail. Just one. It's so elegant and pretty to have one fun drink you offer for everyone, and it’s also simple and easy to prep. (And when they are gone, the wine is ready to flow!)
Here’s a festive favorite of mine:
Bourbon Renewal
2 oz bourbon
1 oz fresh lemon juice
.5 oz creme de cassis
.5 oz simple syrup
1 dash Angostura bitters
Shake ingredients with ice until cold; strain over fresh ice into an old-fashioned glass, garnish with a lemon wedge, or if in season, fresh currants.
MUSIC: From Katie, Producer
Make a party playlist (or source one). Whatever you do, just be thoughtful about it. The power of music to set a mood simply can’t be overstated. One of my personal favorite playlists for dinner parties (esp. with Latin American food on the menu) is the soundtrack from the movie Chef.
CURATE SPECIAL MOMENTS: From Jess, Producer (Yellow X) & Production Assistant (Mango)
Plan meaningful activities, perhaps a fun game or two… you want people to leave your party wanting more! Maybe incorporate a surprise… something they wouldn’t expect that sets your party apart from the rest.
LITTLES: From Katie, Producer (and mother of young children)
Are kids coming? If so, take a minute to think about how you can make it special for them and keep them engaged. Perhaps their own separate snack spread? For younger kids, consider offering a separate activity like a pretend “drive-in” movie showing, a scavenger hunt, or a custom Bingo game with small prizes (run by the older kids)? If the kids are having fun (esp. on their own), then the adults are definitely having fun (and you will be earning major brownie points as a host).
INCLUSIVITY: From Katie, Producer
If you’re providing food and beverage, make sure to include options for everyone. This is the surest way to make your guests feel comfortable and that they’ve been considered (which is really just a form of loving people). Plan to accommodate for food allergies and vegetarian/vegan preferences, have non-alcoholic beverages available, and be mindful of anyone who might have dietary restrictions tied to religious observance. Other ways to be inclusive include communicating clearly about plus ones, making plans to host kids/families when appropriate, and providing concurrent activity options for larger groups so folks can engage in the way they feel most comfortable (i.e., let the introverts be introverts).
THE “WHY”: From Ryan, Owner/Designer
Why? Word on the street is that if you don't know why you're doing something, well... good luck. Don't know why you want to lose 5 pounds, well you probably won't. (And maybe you shouldn't.) Dont' know why you want to exercise? Well you probably won't. (And, again, maybe you shouldn't.). So, why are you throwing the party? To show off? To give the gift of hosting to friends? To give them a night they won't forget? Community? Just good food? I mean the choices are endless but if you know the why, you know the vibe, and it just helps guide the entire event. That's in my humble opinion at least.
Cheers to you and to all whom you will gather - and create epic events with - this Holiday season!

Marking Time: 5 Reasons to Send Holiday Cards
Traditions like annual holiday cards are just one small way we mark time and “acknowledge the threshold” of a change in season and the transition into a new year. They help us feel a little bit more grounded and human in our ever-changing world.
Guess what: we’re all human. And since we’re humans and we generally have to interact with one another in society, we’ve agreed on ways to mark the passage of time (clocks, calendars, seasonal equinox, daylight savings, New Year’s Eve parties….). We’ve done this so that we can function effectively as a species, and so that our shared ideas of time can help our brains process the changes that occur as a result of our lived experiences (e.g., “Why do I see so many gray hairs on my head when I look in the mirror now?! Oh yes…I just celebrated my forty-third birthday…this is normal for forty-three-year olds of my kind”).
Marking time in one shape or form is a thing humans have done from the beginning. It’s part of how we make sense of our world. Not only have we created complex systems that we use in our modern world to keep tabs on our time and place (think Apple Watch or Google Maps), we also have long-held rituals and traditions we’ve inherited that help us transition and “step over the threshold” into new stages and seasons, while also reminding us to reflect on where we’ve been (think birthday candles, religious holidays and festivals, New Year’s resolutions). There seems to be something deep within us that needs to stop and acknowledge the inevitable, existential nature of change, even when our day-to-day lives may have seemingly changed very little.
“It is wise in your own life to be able to recognize and acknowledge the key thresholds; to take your time; to feel all the varieties of presence that accrue there; to listen inward with complete attention until you hear the inner voice calling you forward.”
Traditions like annual holiday cards are just one small way we mark time and “acknowledge the threshold” of a change in season and the transition into a new year. They help us feel a little bit more grounded and human in our ever-changing world. If you’ve always sent holiday cards, you might pause and reflect a bit about why you’re doing it in the first place (and approach it a little differently this year accordingly?). If you’ve never been one to send out a holiday card and you aren’t sure it’s worth it, perhaps you’ll consider a little food for thought…
5 REASONS TO SEND HOLIDAY CARDS:
THEY MARK TIME: Cards are a small but effective way to make sense of the moment we’re in. We're human and we need these kinds of reminders. Annual holiday cards can actually help our brains process the change of seasons from fall to winter and the year that is coming to a close.
CARDS ARE TANGIBLE: Sending snail mail in an increasingly digital world can be beautiful (that's right…REAL paper that you can hold in your hand and hang on a wall)!
MOMENTS OF GRATITUDE: Whether you're reminiscing as you sift through a year's worth of photos to choose for your own card, addressing a card to be sent to your childhood best friend for the 20th year in a row, or receiving a sweet picture and note from an unexpected source, holiday card moments create opportunities to reflect on the past, look towards the future, and cultivate gratitude here and now for all the people who have entered your orbit over the years.
COMMUNITY: People want to hear from you. It may be the only time this year that you’ve communicated with a few of the folks on the ole’ mailing list, but honestly, holiday cards can still be important touch points. Small gestures can move mountains when it comes to maintaining relationships across time and space.
GIVE & YOU SHALL RECEIVE: This isn’t 2007 and you’re not trying to accumulate as many Facebook friends as possible, but let’s face it…when you send a card to someone, you’re more likely to get one in return, and there’s nothing more beautiful then a space FULL of kind words and pictures you’ve received from the people you love.
At the end of the day, don't just send a card because “that's what you've always done.” Send it to share a little bit of your story…your joys, your surprises, your growth, your grief, your love…with all your people. Mark this moment in time, and step over the threshold into the new year.

MANGO INK DOES ALBUM COVERS.
did you know that Mango Ink HAS DONE ALBUM ART?
LET’S DANCE
If you didn’t already know, we’re more than meets the eye! Custom stationery, graduation invites, holiday cards, and even branding, but album covers too? You know it!
We’re here to do it all! Anything creative endeavor we can. Especially for a band as cool and fun as Ferris Pier. We have worked with Ferris Pier on all the singles and EP covers below… what’s your favorite? And also, if you need some album art, let us know!
Here is a little story from Ryan about how he knows the creator of Ferris Pier:
“Pasma is one of my favorite people on the planet. I can’t even remember the first time I met him… although I do remember going to a concert of his when he was in college and jamming out to music and beats that had everybody smiling and dancing and sweating.
Then he went to medical school and became a doctor. What?
Don’t worry this doc didn’t lose his spark - he’s too bright. It so happened that I was doing a live event called Lights Like Us and he was starting a new band called Ferris Pier. So he did a song for the event and has continued to rock out happy, inspiring, dance beats and melodies with some amazing artists - that always bring a smile to my face and some movement to my feet or hands or some body part.
Sexy fun. His covers all needed to do the same. If they didn’t, well, they just wouldn’t work.”

OUR PART IN BEING ETHICALLY AND SUSTAINABLY CONSCIOUS AND TAKING ACTION!!
Yes, Earth Day was a month ago, but it seems like the planet deserves more than a day, right? So we are still talking about the planet, steps everyone can be taking to better Earth's lifespan, and how we at Mango Ink (in and outside the company) do our part to be more eco friendly!
Yes, Earth Day was a month ago, but it seems like the planet deserves more than a day, right? So we are still talking about the planet, steps everyone can be taking to better Earth's lifespan, and how we at Mango Ink (in and outside the company) do our part to be more eco friendly!
So you may be wondering,
“How can a company that bases their entire business on paper products do anything good for the environment?”
We're trying our best! For starters, we've made so many changes to reduce waste and the use of plastics. We have converted all our plastic packaging to eco friendly, sustainably sourced tissue paper. (it’s Compostable and Recycled, 30% Recycled material and 70% new acid-free virgin pulp, FSC certified, soy-based ink) and we use recycled packaging whenever possible. (we just save that packing paper from all our other shipments and reuse it.)
As for paper, we use matte green, 100% recycled paper and have started exploring the world of hemp paper, recycled cotton, renewal straw that is energy aware / uses wind power, and chlorine free. We LOVE all the papers that are certified rain forest alliance, FSC certified, green seal certified. The paper world is RAD and we are so excited to have these options. AND our wedding suite TWO-GETHER is printed on bamboo cardstock. (Bamboo cardstock: The natural white, warm-toned bamboo paper does not contain optical brighteners, and stands out thanks to its soft, lightly textured felt structure and sensual feel. Bamboo is acid- and lignin-free. The unique combination of sustainable bamboo fibres, soft surface texture and impressive print quality gives this suite a luxurious feel. it’s amazing.)
Separate from the business, the lovely individuals that make up the Mango Ink team each have various passions surrounding caring for our lovely home!
We have rounded up the team to each share how they feel drawn to take care of this beautiful planet.

i birthed a daughter (now 17) who has been listening to the earth and its pains since she was in elementary school. i remember when she came home after learning about greenhouse gasses and fossil fuels and that cows were largely responsible. (honestly she was beside herself and she shocked me with how much she listened to her teachers.) so this was the beginning of our journey. asking the hard questions. how can we be better in all things? personal AND our business. we are leaving this planet to the generations behind us, so what can we do to help? anna has been my best teacher and curious learner in this area. she is the cheerleader for our family and all those around her. she has been begging for years to be plant based… and me being a cook and a lover of food had me really dragging my feet. i was so scared. food is everything to me! i think about it WAY too much. but back in december i had a moment as a mama. am i going to send our baby to college with the disappointment that nobody in her family listened to her deep convictions? that her own parents are apathetic and not listening? i had this realization that it was so important to listen to anna. i wanted to be a part of learning to cook plant based AND kick ass at it. if we are going to eat, it has to be amazing! AND i wanted to set her up for success heading out on her own. that she has all the tools she needs to cook plant based and with whole foods. real food. and for me, since i love food, there is freedom in this “plant based” statement. freedom to have that lasagna my mom made, buy a cow from the farm 10 minutes away and reduce our carbon footprint and also not support factory farms. it feels good to be trying and honestly eating really really good too. (and having fun learning new methods of cooking.) xx, heidi
P.S. this is the best naan i have ever made! https://www.noracooks.com/vegan-naan/
Ryan

Since it's my latest foray into a more sustainable way of life, I'll stick with food for this one. (But I do use vinegar for weed killer. : )
As of last December I upped my plant-based goals from 50% to 90%. Here are my top 5 reasons for trying to eat 90% plants (ranked in order of personal importance).
Sustainability. It’s been said many times and will be said many more times, if everyone eats meat 3 times a day, the earth simply can’t support it. The resources required to produce enough cows, chickens, pigs, goats, etc… for every human to eat meat (and dairy plays a huge part as well) just don’t work. Every pound of cow requires 1,875 gallons of water alone, not to mention land use (that can't be used for other foods), methane, pollution, etc… it goes on and on. But on the good side, if everyone just pulled back to eating meat a few times a week - big things would happen!
Climate Change. IF the above could work, and humans are trying our best to make sure it works, it absolutely wrecks the environment in the process. Research has shown that going vegan reduces greenhouse emissions by 60%. A study from Oxford said going vegan was the “single biggest way” to reduce our carbon footprint. Facts are abundant but here's a fun one: the typical slaughterhouse discharges 331 pounds of nitrogen a day - the equivalent of untreated sewage for a town of 14,000 people.
Human ethics. I’ve read a few books on the human beings (mainly immigrant minorities) who work in meat processing facilities , and, honestly, the ways they are treated - and their health problems - alone, are enough to make me not buy meat unless I’m 100% positive where it came from and how it was sourced (like our rancher friends who live a few miles away from us). It's a crime in many states to film inside slaughterhouses. Huh? Poultry workers are usually forced to process 35-45 birds per minute… and most industrial meat facilities have 100% turnover rates year to year.
Animal Ethics. What can I say, I love animals. I love them so much I barely like to own them because I feel like they should be natural, free, and not fed pellets by me. I also hate seeing them in pain and/or sick and… whoa… the stuff done to animals in factory farming is… yikes. Just spend a few moments on YouTube for hidden cameras in pork factories. I mean only do that if you never want to eat pork again - that's what happened to me a few years ago. And that was it for me.
Physical Benefit. Lots of studies have been done but Michael Pollan summed it up years ago: (and this was recently confirmed by A.J. Jacobs (after trying EVERY diet out there - or at least the vast majority) “eat real food, mostly plants, and not too much". It's good for your heart, your weight, your cholesterol, your muscles, and your mind.
And all of that said, I also value community, friendship, and generosity a ton so if you have me over for an unethically sourced steak, I'll be there eating it with you and talking about the world together. :) - Ryan

I have always had a big love for thrifting and repurposing furniture, clothing and textiles. That hobby soon flipped to a personal pledge to purposefully buy second hand after doing a research project on fast fashion during my time in college. Educating myself on green washing, the effects landfills and unethical factories have on our land along with the workers behind the material, changed my outlook. Taking that extra five minutes to do research on a brand, and learning their missions have helped me reshape how I am as a consumer. I understand not everything can be bought second hand, however, veering towards higher quality companies to ensure longevity is a great alternative.
FACT:
2,000 gallons of water are used to make one pair of jeans. That's as much water as the average person drinks in 7 years.

When it comes to sustainability I choose to take action by being vegetarian and as vegan as possible. I haven’t eaten meat in 8 years! Being a vegetarian helps reduce pollution of our streams, rivers, and oceans. Pollution from livestock production largely comes from animal waste. It also has the benefit of reducing carbon emissions and using less water. Another way I take action with sustainability is by sewing. I go to thrift stores and buy used clothing, blankets, and fabric to transform into other things so it does not end up in a landfill but rather it can be something new to be loved again!

their love story:
Brandon’s story: “I picked her up on the Honeysuckle Boat Dock”
Tiffanie’s story: “In August 2011 we did meet on Hayden Lake at the Honeysuckle Boat dock where a mutual friend invited me to go fishing after work. Let’s just say I didn’t love fishing so I went to the gym the first time all summer hoping to kill some time. I showed up in my workout clothing and they decided they were hungry so we went to dinner at the Boathouse bar and grill on Hayden Lake. I considered it a WIN! We hung out the following weekend where we enjoyed friends at a lake house and enjoyed Art on The Green weekend together where he decided it would be a great idea to meet up with his parents 😂. I tried to dip out of this situation but he assured me that he was just saying hi.. turns out he told his mom that he wanted her to meet me.
Brandon started his career on the BASSMASTER Elite Series in 2011 and had just finished his season upon our meeting. I didn’t understand the extend of a professional bass fisherman but I learned fast.
2013 I started traveling with him full time to get him with his career and to be able to make memories together and not always partaking in a long distance relationship. Around 2013, is when he “joked” about his Ten Year Plan. Dating 10 years before marriage.
2016 we adopted our dog Bella from a animal shelter in Georgetown, South Carolina.
Turns out the 10 year plan wasn’t a joke. In August it’ll be our 10 year anniversary.
He asked my parents to marry me on Dec 26, 2019 and nearly a year later on December 9, 2020 we went to take Christmas card photos at the Honeysuckle boat dock and after 3 photos he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him.”
a note from heidi:
tiffanie and brandon, you two are the best! i feel so honored to have been a part of your wedding day in this way. and tiffanie, you crushed wedding planning on the road following your fisherman! i am in awe of you and loved every minute working together. next up, baby announcements! congratulations on your baby on the way and your anniversary coming up! much love, heidi
love from the bride:
“I never knew how many people would pay attention to the details of our day of stationary, invitations, stir sticks, napkins, etc. I had an enormous amount of my wedding guest comment how beautiful the invitations were. Our invitations that Heidi at Mango Ink designed and customized beautifully. She is incredible to work with and offer so much opportunity for making all of your stationary/invites/signage and much more come to life for the wedding or event. I didn't think I needed anything other than invitations but she offered and displayed so many beautiful options and helped tie everything together beautifully with no pressure just offers and helping hands. The communication was flawless, the delivery was beautiful, and ahead of schedule. I could go on and on about my experience but trust me, MANGO INK is a must have vendor for any event or wedding. Do yourself a favor and hire them you won't regret it.

GET TO KNOW ME… VOL. 3 // DAY OF SIGNAGE
Ahhh day of signage sends the most amazing message to your guests. You are creating an experience for them, and you, and they will feel your love and intentionality throughout your epic celebration.
This week, volume 3, we're getting to know more about day of signage! that's right! We offer signage that you will need for your special day! From directing your guests to their table, to the cocktails on the menu, we love getting creative and branding signage to match your wedding invitations.
Scroll through to learn the process, the lengths we can go, and why we love collaborating on fun signage with you.
starting from the very beginning
You have already gotten through the tough decisions! Branding your invitations was the first step for your day of signage! Now that we have narrowed down your colors fonts, other assets, we can use alll those lovely elements to create your signage for your special day! This ensures cohesion between the two, stationery, and signage, so your guests recognize and appreciate the hard work you put into creating a aesthetic and organized wedding!
design process
Once you provide us with seating charts, the menu for the reception, amount of table numbers you need and whatever other necessities, we begin designing!
This is where your vision and creativity can really SHINE! We have had so many creative couples come to us with such fun ideas like acrylic signs, stir sticks, customized napkins, or even personalized bar signs! The options are almost entirely endless!
There are so many reasons to love day of signage.
For starters, they are personalized to you!
1. The day of signage is the cherry on top! It is your BIG day and the final way we can help provide you with lovely paper or other products to make sure your wedding is memorable and a pleasant experience!
2. Material! We have so fun creating designs that extend from just paper products! Seeing the end results of stir sticks or cake toppers is so special for us because we know these items are going to be in your wedding scrapbook and cherished forever.
3. Your guests will appreciate signage more then you and them know haha! Think about how much signage surrounds us in everyday life! From bus routes, bathrooms, restaurant menus, the freeway, we often overlook the importance of signage.
Now that you've gotten to know about the unique and special day of signage, you can spread the love and get to know our next feature in volume 4! Stay tuned.

GET TO KNOW ME… VOL. 2 // CUSTOM MAPS
You guys! We love designing a personalized map for you. It’s such an amazing way to tell your story and showcase the place of your celebration.
This week, volume 2, we're getting to know more about custom maps! that's right! We offer customizable maps where we work with you to create a personalized map to your liking to give to your guests before your special day.
Scroll through to learn the process, the lengths we can go, and why we love this option to include in your wedding invitation bundle.
starting from the very beginning
You gotta give us something to work with. Share a little bit about your love story! We love hearing about your "meet cute" and I'm sure you and your significant other love telling it:) Knowing more insight on your story, your lifestyle, we can really begin to get a feel for your vibe and learn what parts of your life together have been impactful.
From there, with your insight and requests we work together to choose up to five locations that are most meaningful to you (amount can be altered and can increase price).
design process
Once we have an agreement on destinations you want to see on the map, we begin the design process. For starters we research the places, their distance from each other and how we can manipulate their coordinates to fit the card while remaining realistic. We then do some digging on the locations, finding inspiration photos to work with.
After finding the inspo we begin drawing! Many of our icons you see are minimalistic, line work. Not only is this an aesthetic and a popular style, but less detail tends to be visually easier to recognize for your guests. When having to shrink down icons to fit everything on a 5x7 or smaller card, this style of icons create a balanced and legible map.
There are so many reasons to love custom maps.
For starters, they are personalized to you!
1. They share a piece of you and your significant other that many don't see on an everyday basis! Showcasing parts of the town you live in or where you met allows family and friends to step in your shoes for a day!
2. Guests have something to in the meantime! Many guests make a vacation around a wedding celebration. Especially if they are traveling far. A map not only gives them a better understanding of the town, but they can explore from a locals point of view.
3. A custom map is a great keepsake! They can act as a small art print that you or your loved ones will WANT to keep forever! Whether framing it or putting it on the fridge, custom maps are a cute form of artwork.
Now that you've gotten to know about fun and personalized custom maps, you can spread the love and get to know our next feature in volume 3! Stay tuned.

GET TO KNOW ME… VOL. 1 // WAX SEALS
Let’s talk about all things wax seals! The most elegant way to brand you as a family.
We are starting a new segment in our fun newsletters (are you signed up?) where we share more insight on the impact of traditional design elements on the receiver! We're calling it Get to Know Me. We'll chat about our favorite elements you can include in your wedding invitation bundle, holiday cards, or even a 50th birthday celebration invite! This week, volume 1, we're getting to know alllll about wax seals!! A fan favorite, not to mention ours as well;)
Scroll through to learn the traditions, the process, the lengths we can go, and why we are sooo drawn to the wax seal appeal.
starting from the very beginning
So where did wax seals originate from? Well turns out they date all the way back to the Middle Ages, ancient Mesopotamia to be exact. But prior to wax seals, dating back to ancient Egypt, signet rings were used to establish ownership and prevent forgery on important documents. These rings were later destroyed after the owner's passing.
Wax seals were used due to common illiteracy during those times, and made for a strong signature so others were aware of whom the sender was. Wax seals weren't always available to all, originally only for the wealthy or ruling classes (surprise, surprise). But on further advances, around the 13th century, wax seals gained popularity among various classes and groups of people such as monasteries.
One of the main reasons seals rose in popularity were the expense. It may come as a surprise now, but seals reduced the cost of mailing letters it the seal acted as a substitute for an envelope. Now, we could never get away with such a thing, but how interesting!
So you may be wondering, how did wax seals die out? Once envelopes evolved, they had adhesive on the inside flap, therefore kicking wax seals to the curb. But HEY! Wax seals aren't forbidden! They have found a rebirth, being used to convey to the recipient a special occasion or important information is inside the gorgeous sealed envelope!
There are so many reasons to love wax seals.
For starters, they are personalized to you!
1. In the case of weddings, they signify the beginning to joining you and your significant others' families. Think of it like a simplified family crest!
2. Many people don't know this but this come in a wideee range of colors! From matte, shimmery, too even transparent! If there is a color you want, 9/10 times we will have it for you.
3. You get to keep the wax seal stamp! We want you to be able to save such a special element of your invitations and this way you are able to add that stamp to a keepsake box with all your other special wedding trinkets. Or hey! order yourself some wax in the future and reuse you and your partner's monogram for any special occasion! Holiday cards, baby shower announcements, birthday celebration, you name it!
4. The first impression your guests have of your wedding celebration are the invitations they receive in the mail. So why not go all out and really WOW them! Make them excited for a night everyone will remember!
Now that you've gotten to know about show stopping wax seals, you can spread the love and get to know our next feature in volume 2! Stay tuned.

ceremony + reception // the farmhouse on green bluff
vibe // a modern gorgeous indoor-outdoor event space. with a clean, white backdrop and vaulted ceilings, the outdoor space boasts beautiful 360 degree views, with a wonderful view of mt. spokane.
their love story:
We met in high school, though we didn't get together until college (funny how that works, right?). We both did track at our respective universities - Braden was a pole vaulter at Eastern and Mayson high jumped at UW. Needless to say, we are both very active and love a good adventure. Braden proposed on the top of Winchester Mountain in the heart of the North Cascades. We hiked to the peak and Braden got down on one knee right at sunset. It was the most romantic surprise, Mayson literally almost fainted and Braden had to catch her HA! We even got to spend the night in the fire lookout with a full 360-degree view of the most beautiful mountains.
a note from heidi:
ahhh mayson and braden, what beauties. honestly, when you get to work with a bride that connects in all the ways AND brought me wine as a thank you AND added me to their christmas card list; that is a dream times a million. i love how this couple radiates love and intentionality in all they do. together they are a force in this world, i just know it. thank you for trusting mango ink mayson + braden! congratulations on your gorgeous wedding and gorgeous marriage. xoxo
love from the bride:
“Having worked with Mango ink for all my wedding stationery needs, it is clear why they are so sought after. Heidi is professional, prompt, creative and did I mention extremely talented? I gave her a few ideas to run with and she created the wedding stationery suite that dreams are made of. I think she actually saw my vision better then I even did.. The entire process was very collaborative and fun- pretty much any idea you have, Heidi will find a way to make it happen in the. Most beautiful way When beyond the process and the finished product, she goes above and BEYOND with all the little details, so far as to taking a full invitation to the post office herself to ensure we had the correct postage .We feel fortunate to have nbeen able to work with her for our wedding and we will definitely be working with Mango Ink again in the future. I could not speak more highly of this company!”

their love story:
“We both went to The University of Montana and that’s where we met. We did long distance for a year or so while Channing was finishing school and then Channing moved to Seattle. We did what I call the "California stint" for about 4 years in Santa Barbara, CA and then moved back to Seattle and bought a home a year ago. We chose a venue right outside of Glacier since it's always been a dream of mine to get married there and I still cant believe it's becoming a reality---a big reason we can make it happen is my parents reside in Whitefish now. We just love MT and are excited to be getting married where it all started.... :) We got engaged in Seville, Spain in Sept 2019. It was so romantic... Channing crushed the proposal hahaha. Our 7 year dating anniversary is coming up next month! We both love camping, skiing, travel, road trips, anything outdoors--- our garage looks like a mini REI with all the gear we have.”
congratulations you two! working with you was a dream. your color palette and vision was perfection. let’s do it again! :) xo, heidi
love from the bride:
“Heidi is a dream to work with. She is responsive and super flexible to help you land on the perfect invites! I am a "busy bride" and I went into the invitation process not really knowing what I wanted but knew I didn't want to spend a fortune... GO WITH MANGO INK! Her questionnaire definitely helps to make sure you are complete and not missing the important details but also not a burden. I went with a semi-custom invitation suite but it was completely customizable to my wedding colors and she made the most incredible custom map for us. She totally understood my vision and came back with the most beautiful invitations. They just went out this week and the responses from recipients have been "Oh my gosh! These are so creative, unique and beautiful!! Where did you get these?!" 10/10 !! Thank you, Heidi!”

their love story:
“We met at the University of Montana in 2009 as rowdy teens and spent the next 4 years in a close friend group, partying, getting into trouble, and playing outside. After we had been out of school for a couple years (2015), I was living in Seattle, Jack was living in Boston, I came out to the East coast to visit my best friend, and over the course of a week, Jack and I reconnected, I made new friends, fell in love with Boston, and decided I had to move there. We started dating several months later, spent a few years traveling and living in Boston, eventually moving to New York City. We love to ski, travel, eat spicy foods, golf, camp, hike and cruise the city with our Wiener dog, Chauncey. In December 2019, Jack proposed in the snow outside of our favorite hotel in the world (L'apogee), in Courchevel 1850, the French Alps, after a beautiful day of skiing, massages, and champagne. France + Champagne + Mountains. It was perfect.”
congratulations to ashley and jack! it’s true, you can fall in love over the internet (meaning me, to ashley ha). i loved every minute working on this magical wedding suite. what a dream bride and light you are ashley! one day we will meet in real life. happy anniversary you two beauties! xo, heidi
“I only have great things to say about my experience working with Mango Ink for our save the dates, shower invites, wedding invitation suite (and cancellation note), signage and announcements. Don’t go anywhere else! Honestly, did I even have a vision for my own wedding before I met Heidi? Debatable. She totally read my mind from the beginning, took all my wild ideas and turned them into cohesive works of art, and fully exceeded my expectations at every turn. Beyond her creative genius, she was a professional angel throughout the process and rolled with all the changes 2020 threw at us. A big thanks to Heidi, from the bottom of my heart, for making my dreams come!”

Our proposal was epic, he took me on a helicopter ride and proposed on top of a sky scraper on top of LA. It was truly unreal. Overall, we are a pretty easy going, fun loving couple. HAPPY 2022 + our favorite new year's tradition that you will want to do!
the best new year’s tradition that you should start with your family!
“ it always keeps us laughing, pushing, dreaming, and being grateful at the same time. ”
OUR FAVORITE FAMILY NEW YEAR TRADITION!
In 2015, with our youngest at 11 years old and our oldest at 18, we started a New Year’s Eve family tradition that has turned into one of our absolute favorites as it has evolved and changed… along with us. It’s pretty simple at its root: we write down (at least) 5 things we are grateful for from the year before (this often involves looking through old photos on the phone) and then we write down (at least) 5 things we want to accomplish/dream about for the upcoming year.
After we’ve written them down, we share them with the family, put them an envelope and wait to open them the following year where we read the 5 things we dreamed about - and comment about how good or bad we did - and then start the process all over.
We’ve had “eat more smoothies”, “graduate college”, “visit 3 countries”, “start meditating”, “call a friend every week” and every thing in between over the years but it always keeps us laughing, pushing, dreaming, and being grateful at the same time.
So, as 2022 starts, (we had to our tradition early because our daughter had to get back to her nursing job - a goal from last year) we’ve got our list down for 2022 and highly recommend doing some version of your own. It’s been nothing but a good time. Let us know if you try it with your family.
soooo, 2022.... LET'S GOOOOO!
for the new year, we are wishing these things for all of us :
pandemic gone (right?)
purging what no longer is needed in our lives (people, things, habits?)
strength to heal and move past things holding us back (what is not working?)
listening to the changes we need to make, and honoring that for ourselves. (for the person who puts themselves last.)
SENDING LOVE TO YOU ALL from our family to yours!
with love, ryan and heidi
guess, what? heidi is a minted designer too.
for the past 11 years at Mango Ink, i have leaned over ryan's shoulder and watched him design all of our designs and when i had ideas of my own, I would direct him as he clicked and moved things around. i loved all of this.
a couple of years ago, ryan encouraged me and reminded me that i SHOULD be designing myself. full of self doubt and insecurities i began to learn design programs and watch as many tutorials as i could find. ryan had to rescue me so many times and all the while he kept saying, "heidi you CAN do this". i look back and can hardly believe how far i have come. i am a graphic designer? and while i can sorta start to say that i am a graphic designer and believe it, all it has done is given me a thirst for more. there is so much to learn and aspire to be. i am in love with all of it.
so that brings me to a big celebration for me. i have submitted some designs to the minted community and started my own little brand over there. i am so proud to be heidi lee miller from mango ink. i just keep smiling.
i won this valentines day design as well as these TWO graduation designs, here and here. i am so thankful to be a part of this group of indie designers and am so grateful for the chance to make some art all on my own in this world.
and a side note, 90% of the 2016 holiday collection at mango ink was designed by me, heidi lee miller. if you would have told me this would be true 5 years ago, i wouldn't have believed you.
so, that thing you don't think you can learn? go learn it. that things that scares you? do it. when you read books like Elizabeth's Gilberts Big Magic, you will understand the world needs you and there is no such thing as scarcity. there are enough ideas to go around and nobody does it like you. the world needs you.
thanks for loving mango ink and celebrating this fun thing with us. we are excited for what's ahead.
happy valentines day! xoxoxo heidi
This one won top 20!
This is my baby girl graduating this year, 2017. Photography by KC England!
Seth Godin
Guess what, these two kids are heading to New York (the place that inspires us like non other) to hear Seth Godin. We get to spend all day with him and a group of people taking it all in. Have you heard of Seth Godin? He is is the author of 18 books that have been bestsellers around the world and have been translated into more than 35 languages. He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership and most of all, changing everything. You might be familiar with his books Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip and Purple Cow. So good!
So in preparation for this event, we submitted our Bio's (ryan and heidi) for the event. Thought we would post them there too.
This is complete insanity for us to sneak away this time of year, but guess what? We are!
How Mango Ink began and Our family holiday cards the past 10 years
What a fun thing for us to look back when Mango Ink began and see our kids grow and see time pass! When Mango Ink started, Anna was just a baby. In fact, she was the reason we started this company. I asked Ryan to make me an invitation that was orange, had Anna's baby photo along with her one year old photo. He made me THIS! I was in love. He said, "Hey, let's start a business and call it Mango Ink." And the rest is what you see. We are so grateful and so in love with this company, our clients, our photographer partners, our friends, and the creative juices that flow day after day. And it's all because of YOU. Thank you!
Inspired in New York (again)
Traveling to a place that rocks my soul like this city does, always leaves me reflecting. You can peek at what I learned last visit here.
Some things i'm thinking about......
*The ICFF is so full of ridiculous, gorgeous stuff you can't even take it all in.
*Terrance from Dynomighty Designs is super rad. He hosted a party in their Brooklyn studio for all the Designboom artists (that's us!) and encouraged everyone with the most authentic, freeing perspective. He hasn't even read Seth Godin, so he is a natural. P.S. we love their wallets!
*We had our booth in-between two darling companies. Mihr creates gorgeous hand crafted porcelain bowls, spoons, and earrings all inspired by vegetables. Anthroplogie has been talking to her. As they should. The girls on the other-side of our booth were from Indonesia. Traveled all the way around the world to exhibit in new york with their gorgeous purses. This darling couple from Poland, who came to New York to showcase their bracelets, got engaged the night before the Designboom mart started. They are adorable!
*We took a pedi cab ride through central park on my birthday. Baboe, our driver, was amazing. He was a child soldier in Africa. He told us three times, if he didn't do it, his mother, sister and brother would have been killed. He told us to please not be scared of him now that he told us that. He was precious and so deeply hurt by his past. He has been in New York for 4 years.
*Having dinner at midnight is so fun! Coming from the west coast makes it easy.
*When i get overloaded, literally things cannot sink in. My brain was so full. Yet Ryan somehow doesn't stop. He amazes me all the time.
*Coming back to our three kids was amazing and a reality check all at the same time. They are what really matter and I am thankful for them.
*Thanks to my hubby, we got to see Rock of Ages with Jello shots and canned beer. The. Best. Birthday ever!
*Ryan is truly obsessed with airplanes and airports and runways. He is like a little kid every time he get's to fly. By the way, you need to watch this to remind yourself of the wonder in this world that is around us all the time and we complain too much.
*With the excitement and wonder of owning your own business comes lots of self doubt, dark days, and realizing it's really really a lot of work.
*I am trying with all my heart to do one thing at a time, slowly. Do less, get better at my daily rituals, look at cleaning as meditation instead of in my way. And take pressure off myself. I wish to be perfect and check off my to do list each day. But that never happens. ever. And it's OK.
*Taking time to breathe and cultivate rest and play are a MUST. (once again Brene Brown is right!) and learning to unwind without reaching for a glass or two of wine to help relax would be very very mature and helpful. Bring on the meditation and yoga!
This little love of ours....
We are so excited and in love with the new branch of Mango Ink! It's called 08 Left (which is the name of a runway, in case you are like me and had NO idea). It comes from Ryan's super nerdy love of airplanes and airports. No joke. He loves them. Read about it here.
So here begins a fabulous thing that truly comes from a genuine love and bursts from deep within.
For the dreamers, travelers, planet lovers, collectors, and modern art and typography lovers, this is for you. Collect places you have been and remember the wonder of the art of flight and seeing this world and all it has to offer.
P.S. it makes a great gift for grads and fathers!
